No hot water today
Updated October 2026
A cold shower on a work morning is its own kind of emergency. The good news: most hot water failures are fixed or replaced the same day, and a quick check before you call can save you the call-out entirely.
Shire Hot Water connects you with licensed local plumbers who do same-day hot water work across the Sutherland Shire. Send the quote form with a note that you have no hot water and your details go straight through.
Check these three things first
- Electric storage: check the switchboard. A tripped circuit or a safety switch is the most common cause of a suddenly cold tank, and the fix is free. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and get the plumber in.
- Gas: check the pilot light and that other gas appliances still work. If the cooktop is dead too, the issue may be gas supply, not your hot water system.
- Everything: look at the tank. Water pooling underneath means the tank has failed and it is replacement time, no repair will save it.
Repair today or replace today
If the tank is sound and the fault is a part, a repair usually has hot water back the same visit. If the tank is leaking or the system is past its lifespan, the plumbers we work with can usually do a like-for-like replacement the same day for common sizes, if you get in early. Either way you get the price before any work starts.
What same-day work costs
Repairs typically run $150 to $600 depending on the part. A like-for-like replacement starts from under $1,200 installed for a smaller electric storage swap and runs higher for gas, continuous flow and larger tanks. After-hours attendance costs more than daytime, so if you can hold out until morning, book the morning.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really get hot water back today?
Often, yes. Parts repairs happen on the spot, and common replacement sizes are usually on the truck or a supplier run away. The later in the day you call, the more likely it lands tomorrow morning.
My hot water is lukewarm, not cold. Same problem?
Lukewarm usually points to a failing element or thermostat on electric systems, or a tempering valve issue. It is a cheaper fix than a dead system, and worth booking before it becomes one.
Should I turn the system off while I wait?
If the tank is leaking, yes: turn off the power or gas to the unit and close the cold water inlet valve on the tank to slow the leak. If it simply went cold, leave it as is so the plumber can diagnose it.
